Engagement of Groups

  • Student body/Ole Miss community votes (formal affiliation with school necessary) on hot bed issues instead of leaving them to be decided by an oligarchy who is largely not representative of the student body.
  • Advisory Groups/Boards
  • Collaboration between Alumni Relations, Athletics, UM Foundation, Campus (This is good now but can always improve)
  • Visit Community Centers.
  • Res Hall visits.
  • It could be beneficial to have something similar to this that is more student-led. It can be intimidating for students to come to events like this, let alone share all of their ideas.
  • Future town halls are great, but I am always a supporter of one-on-one conversations. I believe in open door policies and opportunities for direct question and answer scenarios. Possibly a separate student based council on a smaller scale than ASB that can have a more direct relationship with the Chancellor and administration.
  • We directly call Alumni for their input.
  • We directly hold a vote to students across all campuses on key issues.
  • How do we engage the upcoming freshman at the university on History? Our core held traditions? Seems to be there is no concentration regarding our past mascots and other lost traditions.
  • Students — give ASB, VC for Student Affairs Advisory, and other student groups more of a voice.
  • Staff — provide staff opportunities to voice opinions without fear of back lash, risking jobs, promotions.
  • Student engagement (intentional).
  • Student Forums with Chancellor Vitter.
  • Forged better connections with City and County leaders, but also more meetings with us.
  • Focused “town hall” alumni club meetings.
  • Utilizing the talents and skillsets of all employees and students.
  • Utilize the human talents and tactics of faculty and staff skilled in dialogue, safe but challenging and honest conversations, and restorative justice.
  • Allow all voice to be heard — faculty, staff (including hourly and custodial staff), students, parents, and alumni. It seems to me that only certain members of our community feel safe to share their concerns/ideas.
  • Giving students opportunities beyond town halls to meet with administration.
  • Host concert/picnic/tailgate in the Grove with the Chancellor and Mayor providing updates on city/campus partnerships.
  • Outreach utilizing university ambassadors, including alumni, faculty and staff, key media relationships and platforms, social media, fundraising, strategic partnerships, media outlets (such as ESPN).
  • More open forums/discussion panel opportunities for students/faculty/the community to discuss issues together and engage each other.
  • Joint meetings of leadership teams from staff council, faculty senate, ASB, Grad Student Council.
  • Perhaps a university senate or campus assembly structure?
  • Reach out to not just Oxford, but surrounding communities as well.
  • Inform community that university growth = community growth.
  • Create outlines for faculty to have conversations with students.
  • Small group gatherings on a regular basis with goals and feasible benchmarks.
  • More marketing/networking/integration. Cross-department engagement.
  • Communication starts in depts./offices as well as classrooms. Make sure all areas/individuals are included in conversations.
  • Focus groups, polls.
  • More focus groups.
  • Form the task force to identify and prioritize the interests of the UM community members.
